Safeguarding and Keeping Children Safe

Safeguarding children is everyone's responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and

families has a role to play.

At St Michael and All Angels Catholic Primary School our pupils’ welfare is our paramount concern.  The governing body will ensure that our school will safeguard and promote the welfare of pupils and work together with other agencies to ensure that our school has adequate arrangements to identify, assess and support those children who are suffering or likely to suffer harm.

Our school is a community and all those directly connected: staff members, governors, parents, families and pupils, have an essential role to play in making it safe and secure.

Keeping Children Safe in Education

Prevent Strategy

The Prevent Duty

St Michael and All Angels Primary is committed to providing a secure environment for pupils, where children feel safe and are kept safe. All adults in our school recognise that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility irrespective of the role they undertake or whether their role has direct contact or responsibility for children or not.

What is the Prevent Strategy?

Prevent is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist or extremist causes.

The Prevent strategy covers all types of terrorism and extremism.

Educate Against Hate – https://educateagainsthate.com/

How does the Prevent strategy apply to schools?

All schools have a duty to safeguard children from radicalisation and extremism.

This means we have a responsibility to protect children from extremist and violent views the same way we protect them from drugs or gang violence.

The Governing Body fully accepts the school's responsibility to implement the Prevent Duty.  Our policy below details the school's duties under the Prevent Duty.

PREVENT POLICY

The Prevent strategy is not just about discussing extremism itself, which may not be appropriate for younger children. However, it is about teaching children values such as tolerance and mutual respect.

Importantly, we can provide a safe place for pupils to discuss any issues so they better understand how to protect themselves.

PREVENT Risk Assessment - We have developed a detailed risk assessment to ensure that our processes are robust and able to ensure that these duties are effectively undertaken.

Operation ENCOMPASS

Our school is part of Operation Encompass.

Operation Encompass is a national police and education early intervention safeguarding partnership which supports children and young people who experience Domestic Violence and Abuse and which is in place in every police force in England and Wales.

Children were recognised as victims of domestic abuse in their own right in the 2021 Domestic Abuse Act.

Operation Encompass means that the police will share information with our school about all police attended Domestic Abuse incidents which involve any of our children PRIOR to the start of the next school day.

Once a Key Adult (DSL) and their deputy (DDSLs) have attended either an Operation Encompass briefing or completed the online Operation Encompass Key Adult training they will cascade the principles of Operation Encompass to all other school staff and Governors. All schools staff and Governors can undertake the online training.

Our DSL undertook training on 31.1.24

Our DDSLs undertook training January 2024

Our Safeguarding Governor is due to undertake training in February 2024
